Michael Putland
Michael Putland (1947–2019) was one of the most prolific and influential music photographers of the 20th century. Based in London and later New York, Putland documented an extraordinary era in popular culture, capturing the defining figures of rock, pop, reggae and contemporary music.
Beginning his career in the late 1960s, Putland became official staff photographer for Disc & Music Echo and toured with The Rolling Stones in 1973 — the first of many long-standing collaborations. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, Putland photographed artists ranging from Leonard Cohen, Queen and ABBA to countless other internationally celebrated musicians. His work featured in leading publications including Sounds, Smash Hits and Q Magazine, and he produced imagery for major record labels such as CBS, Warner, Columbia and EMI.
His vast archive represents one of the most comprehensive records of late 20th century music culture.
