Madelon Hooykaas
Else Madelon Hooykaas (b. 1942, Amsterdam) is a Dutch contemporary photographer, video artist, and filmmaker, internationally recognised for her pioneering work in conceptual art and video environments. While her video and performance art collaborations with Elsa Stansfield have reshaped contemporary practice, Hooykaas’ early photographic work offers rare insight into Dutch urban and coastal life in the 1960s and 70s. These vintage photographs, printed by the artist herself, capture Rotterdam’s harbour, post-war landscapes, urban scenes in Amsterdam, and beach life at Scheveningen — all reflecting a meticulous attention to composition, light, and the everyday.
Her work is included in major Dutch institutions, such as Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Arnhem, Centraal Museum Utrecht, and Bonnefanten Museum Maastricht, as well as international collections including Tate Britain, MoMA, Centre Pompidou, and GoMA Glasgow.
This vintage print by Dutch video artist, photographer and film maker, Madelon Hooykaas is part of her early documentary work exploring Dutch urban and coastal life in the 1960s and 1970s.
