Sheila Rock
Sheila Rock is an American-born photographer who has lived and worked in London since 1970. Known as an ‘accidental photographer’, Rock became a defining figure in music, fashion, and editorial photography.
Her work spans from the emergence of Punk and New Wave in the 1970s and 80s—photographing acts like The Cure, The Clash, and Siouxsie Sioux—to sensitive, intimate portraits of British holidaymakers and striking black-and-white portraits of horses.
Rock’s images have appeared in Time Magazine, Elle, Rolling Stone, Architectural Digest and The Sunday Times, and are included in the National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection in London. Her books, including Punk: A Document of Punk 1976-1980, Sera, and Tough and Tender, chronicle both her editorial achievements and personal artistic explorations.
Her work continues to be exhibited internationally, from London and Amsterdam to Tokyo, Paris, and New York.
Sheila Rock, known for documenting emergence of London’s Punk and New Wave music scene, captures punk icon Jordan (Pamela Rooke) in front of Vivianne Westwood and Malcom McLaren’s legendary shop, the SEX boutique, at 430 King’s Road, London in 1976.
