Mick Williamson
Mick Williamson is a British photographer whose work challenges conventional ideas of the decisive moment. For over forty years, Williamson has focused on the peripheral, the incidental, and the overlooked, creating poetic black-and-white images that dwell in continuity and duration rather than capturing a single instant.
Williamson’s practice began in 1972 with an Olympus half-frame camera, encouraging spontaneous, instinctive photography. His work explores family life, everyday moments, and the possibilities of photography as memory, often shot at arms-length or from the hip. With over half a million images taken to date, Williamson’s meditative approach transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.
He served as Head of Photography at London Metropolitan University for decades and has exhibited internationally.
This ‘snapshot’-style image by Mick Williamson is part of his The Photo-diaries series, an ongoing project, spanning over 50 years, that extends the tradition of the family album and explores photography as a form of memory.
