Michelle Sank
Michelle Sank is a South African-born, UK-based photographer celebrated for her socially engaged portraiture and documentary work. Focusing on themes of youth, identity, and socio-economic diversity, Sank explores the pressures, hopes, and resilience of young people in suburban and coastal towns.
Praised by mentor David Goldblatt for finding the sensational in the everyday, Sank captures moments of vulnerability, empowerment, and self-expression. Her series In My Skin examines transness, body dysmorphia, and the shaping of identity, while The Submerged and Insula investigate the connection between people and place, particularly in Aberystwyth, Wales, and Jersey.
Sank has exhibited and published internationally, receiving recognition including the British Journal of Photography’s ‘Portrait of Britain’ award in 2020.
