Matthew Murray
Matthew Murray is a British photographer whose work moves between documentary, portrait and landscape photography. His acclaimed series Pleasure in Leisure documents the rituals and absurdities of summer holiday culture, capturing humour and vulnerability in destinations such as Benidorm, Florida and Blackpool. In projects such as SKA and Stripper, Murray turns his lens toward subculture and performance, exploring identity, intimacy and voyeurism. With Saddleworth: Responding to a Landscape, Murray engages with the traditions of landscape photography, referencing the light and texture of Dutch seventeenth-century painting.
Murray’s work is held in major collections including MoMA, New York; Tate, London; the Victoria & Albert Museum; and The British Library.
