Herbert Ponting

Herbert Ponting (1870–1935) was a pioneering British photographer, travel writer and the first professional photographer to join a polar expedition. In 1910, Ponting accompanied Captain Robert Falcon Scott on the legendary Terra Nova expedition to Antarctica, documenting one of the most dramatic and tragic chapters in the history of exploration. His photographs remain the defining visual record of Scott’s South Pole mission and the heroic age of Antarctic exploration.

Working in extreme and perilous conditions with early photographic equipment, Ponting captured the vast, sculptural landscapes of Antarctica — endless ice fields, towering glaciers and the daily lives of the expedition team. His images combine documentary precision with striking compositional elegance, positioning him as both a master of early expedition photography and a significant figure in the history of Fine Art Photography.
