Gered Mankowitz
Gered Mankowitz is an internationally acclaimed English photographer whose career spans nearly six decades. Renowned for defining the visual identity of 1960s and 70s music culture, Mankowitz has photographed some of the most iconic figures in modern music history.
His landmark 1965 portraits of The Rolling Stones cemented his reputation, followed by celebrated sessions with Jimi Hendrix at the height of his fame. Throughout the 1970s, 80s and beyond, Mankowitz created enduring images of artists including Kate Bush, Elton John, The Eurythmics, Oasis and many more.
In 1982, his solo exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery in London became the first UK exhibition dedicated entirely to music photography, breaking all previous attendance records. In 2016 he was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society.

This iconic image was shot during Gered Mankowitz’s first session with Jimi Hendrix at the photographer’s Mason’s Yard studio in London in early 1967. The image was tinted blue for Rolling Stone magazine who used it on the cover of their February 1992 edition.
