Davi Corio
David Corio (b.1960, London) is a British photographer internationally recognised for his iconic music photography spanning Reggae, R&B, Hip-Hop, Afrobeats and Rock. Beginning his career in 1978, Corio documented a transformative era in global music culture, contributing to publications including New Musical Express, The Face, Rolling Stone and The New York Times.
His photographs have appeared on hundreds of album covers and within major editorial features, capturing both live performance and intimate studio portraiture. The publication The Black Chord (1999, reissued 2024) remains a landmark celebration of Black music, cementing Corio’s position within contemporary music photography.
Exhibited internationally across Europe, North America and Asia, Corio’s work forms part of significant public and private collections.

This limited edition photograph by David Coriocaptures rapper RZA on West Broadway, New York City, on 5 April 1994, during the filming of a video for his horrorcore project Gravediggaz, featuring his distinctive custom vampire teeth created for the shoot.

This limited edition photograph by David Corio captures Jamaican singer, songwriter, model and actress Grace Jones at Drury Lane Theatre, London, UK on October 10, 1981.
“The ‘Nightclubbing’ LP had just come out and ‘Pull Up To The Bumper’ was being played on every dance-floor. The show started with band members arriving onstage sequentially wearing Grace Jones masks. The crowd cheered everyone of them, each time believing Grace had arrived. The quintessential disco diva finally appeared – dressed as a gorilla. She quickly changed into a masculine sharp suit, then a bronze Issey Miyake plexiglass bustier that fitted like a second skin. Everyone was spellbound.”

“It was pouring with rain so I shot them perched on an armchair in a tiny office. I prefer to improvise with photo sessions rather than having anything planned before the shoot and normally use available light. As the room was so dark I had my Hasselblad balanced in one hand and a flash-gun held underneath to give the shot a bit more dramatic lighting. I had to get prints over to England for the next day and as this was before digital cameras and sending j-pegs I took 24 shots and dashed off to the darkroom to get printing.”
