University of South Wales Photography Students Visit the Gallery
Elliott Gallery was excited to welcome a group of photography students from the University of South Wales for a study visit to the gallery and Madelon Hooykaas’s studio.
The visit began with an in-depth conversation led by Addie Elliott around the work of Henry Horenstein and Daniel Mirer, unfolding the conceptual threads and curatorial decisions shaping the current exhibition. Together, we discussed different approaches to photographic practice, authorship, and what it means to encounter images within a gallery space, as well as the relationship between photographers and galleries and the forms of dialogue, collaboration, and negotiation that shape how work is presented to the public.
From there, the visit continued at Madelon Hooykaas’s inspiring studio, where the students were invited into her archive and working environment for an informal, behind-the-scenes encounter with her practice. As one of the few female photographers and videographers working when she began her career, Hooykaas’s pioneering perspective informed the development of her work, her research processes, and the evolution of her practice. The visit opened up a rich dialogue around experimentation, collaboration, and the realities of sustaining an artistic practice over decades.
