Madelon Hooykaas’ ‘Daydreams’ Screened in Düsseldorf and Manchester

Bedmaking, 1972

We are happy to share two recent international screenings of Madelon Hooykaas’ 1972 film Daydreams.

The first presentation took place at the Inter Media Art Institute (IMAI) in Düsseldorf. There, Hooykaas’ early moving-image work was shown in relation to contemporary feminist and audiovisual practices, highlighting the lasting relevance of her approach to ritual, movement, and perception. The film was also screened at Delia Derbyshire Day in Manchester, spotlighting Hooykaas’ early collaboration with the electronic music pioneer.

At the heart of Daydreams is Hooykaas’ “Bedmaking” sequence, where the routine gesture of arranging sheets is transformed into an exploration of texture and movement. “Part of the concept was making photos of daily rituals… The shapes of the sheet that arose really fascinated me,” she recalls.

This sequence also exists as an independent series, which is available for purchase through Elliott Gallery.
