Jason Oddy talks about his series of Ukrainian Sanatoria in CitizenK Magazine
Photographer, writer and artist Jason Oddy has been featured in the Summer 2022 issue of the CitizenK Magazine, in an article about his series of the Ukrainian Sanatoria.
In this pre-war chronicle, Oddy reminisces the month he spent on the Black Sea coast back in 1999, exploring one of the lesser-known legacies of the Soviet Union, the sprawling network of sanatoria that were once an integral part of the country's healthcare system.
Starting from Odessa, he documented the strange textures and unrelenting symmetries of these institutions. The architecture and interiors of these places may have reflected the different periods of Soviet history, but each era was driven by the same idea of forging the ideal citizen.
